glovebox Film Festival!

The glovebox art collective/organization is putting their metaphorical money where their mouth is and putting on a film festival next month at the Somerville Theater. Sponsored by the Weekly Dig and, of course, their venue host, the fest will screen shorts and animated films from the Boston and NY-based geographies.

Glovebox is committed to showcasing local art/film/multimedia in non-traditional spaces. We at InFEST think an alliance with glovebox would be a good thing which is why we're promoting them. Like us, they put an emphasis on community-building and grassroots locality also encouraging the thrill of risk-taking and an uncompromise of vision.

Milwaukee Underground Film Festival Winners

MUFF (what a great abbreviation for an undergound film fest!) announced its awards this week, where top prizes get a whopping $100. To be fair, the prize winner at the Boston Undergound Film Festival recieved vibrating bunny statues. We do what we can...

The winners are:

TOKYO-EBISU

Tomonari Nishikawa - 5 min, 16mm, 2010 (Binghamton, NY)

IN BETWEEN

IN BETWEEN from Mike Stoltz on Vimeo.

Mike Stoltz - 4.5 min, 16mm, 2006 (Providence, RI)

ALIKI

Richard Wiebe - 5 min, video, 2010 (Iowa City, IA)

ANIMA MUNDI

Kate Balsley - 3.5 min, video, 2010 (Brown Deer, WI)

Milwaukee is an interesting hub of experimental and underground film, mostly centered around the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, and while it's culture and scene are inevitably compared to the juggernaut of an art/film scene 2 hours to the south in Chicago, it remains distinct and resists formal institutionalization, which can't be said about the scene around Columbia College and the SAIC nowadays. But, really it's all good, in both Illinois and Wisconsin. And it's irresponsible to split hairs on issues of purity, making me sound like a pretentious jack-ass.

Migrating Forms

Perhaps the premiere festival for experimental film in Americ, Migrating Forms, starts this weekend at Anthology Film Archives in Manhattan. Migrating Forms evolved out of the now-defunt New York Underground Film Festival. It should be a great program this year.

Filmmakers features include:

Cynthia Maughan

Jacqueline Goss

Madison Brookshire

and I'm really excited for the movie, Oxhide, a true independent film from China (where it's really hard to make an independent film) in which a family plays fictionalized versions of themselves, shown in two parts.

Liu Jiayin

Thanks!

Thanks so much to evryone who came out last Thursday for the second annual InFEST. It really means a lot of us and the local independnet film scene. We don't need Hollywood stars or multi-million dollar marketing campaigns, we can do it all ourselves.

Keep and eye out for more InFEST Screenings this summer. We're coming to town near you!

Until then, check back here for underground festival information and news...

InFEST InFO

The second incarnation of InFEST will take place May 12, 2011 in the Kevin Bright Screening Room.

The first program starts at 12:30, the second begins at 2:30. Don't be late!

This cinematic extravaganza features SNEAK PEAKS of not one, not two, but three (count 'em THREE) new films from Emerson College's own Greth Productions. They've been soaking up a lot of California Sun this year, but that hasn't abated their taste for MAYHEM!

Good Taste - Dir. Greg Hanson
Runaway - Dir. Doug Saribay
Meat Me in Plainville - Dir. Greg Hanson & Casey Regan

There will be other Emerson films and some wonderfully insane independent films shown to put all these upstart students in their place.

Full program and sexy new poster by the end of the week...

But in the MEANTIME.....Enjoy the stimulating link below
